We Can Do More
By Taking Small Positive Steps
By taking positive small steps, we can all do more to help protect the environment we all share and it's valuable resources..
We understand that it’s not always easy but we can all do our bit by making some very small changes.
A lot of our venues already have some great practices in place, which you are helping to support every time you visit, including food waste prevention and food donation to local charities, our venues are working hard behind the scenes.
Here’s a snapshot of some of the great work taking place at The Gate to help move towards a more sustainable tomorrow and details of how you too can get involved by taking some very small steps.
Pizza Hut:
We all know Pizza Hut at The Gate serve delicious pizza, but did you know it’s Pizza Hut’s ambition to be NET Zero by 2030, by constantly measuring their carbon footprint and looking at ways to reduce this.
One of the measures they have taken is the introduction of their range of delicious Plant Forward food options, including a brilliant non dairy choice through their partnership with Violife and of course the amazing Pepperphoni! Even their cheesecakes no longer include cheese! Eating less meat and more plant forward food is one way we can all help to reduce the impact we have on our planet.

And, as a Steering Group Member of the WRAP’s Courthauld Agreement, Pizza Hut have reduced their food waste by 80%, against a target of 25% because they are passionate about reducing waste.
The CTRL Pad:
The CTRL Pad is home to a wide variety of computer game consoles and games across a range of platforms with over 200 games going back over 30 years, they are one of the most popular gaming lounges in the north east and can even boast some celebrity customers!
The CTRL Pad also have some great links to the local community. Working with local schools and colleges they provide work experience to young people in the local community.
Nando’s:
Since 2015 Nando’s have reduced the carbon footprint of their meals by 40% and they are working hard to reduce this further. In the meantime they are committed to balancing their footprint through offsetting projects including supporting the Kariba Forest Project in Zimbabwe and Wonderbags clean cooking project in South Africa. Nando's are focused on adding heat to your plate, not the planet!
And of course, Nando’s have a fantastic range of plant based dishes available so you can still get that Peri Peri fix.

And as we all know, food waste reduction is high priority, that’s why Nando’s work hard to reduce food waste as much as possible by cooking chicken only when it’s needed.
Since 2013 at the end of every night, any cooked chicken that hasn’t been sold is temperature checked, frozen and given to one of the restaurant’s charity partners as part of their ‘No Chucking Our Chicken’ programme. Nandos have over 387 unique charities across the UK and Ireland, supporting all kinds of causes, including youth, homelessness, refugees, and women and family shelters.
If there’s any food waste that can’t be donated they send it to Anaerobic Digestion where it is turned into renewable energy and agricultural fertiliser.
Wetherspoons:
The Keel Row is a Wetherspoons pub, who along with our other venues at The Gate, are committed to reducing food waste.
Wetherspoon’s work with FareShare, a charitable organisation which distributes any unwanted, fit for consumption, food to food banks, community centre and other in need.
The Keel Row also serve a brilliant range of craft ales from local breweries. These change monthly so there are always new options available to try.
The Mayfair Pub & Kitchen:
As one of Newcastle’s friendliest pubs, The Mayfair serve a fantastic range of home cooked dishes which include vegan options and fresh ingredients. In fact, the fresh fruit and veg used in their dishes is hand delivered from the Grainger market, less than a five minute walk away!
The Mayfair also work with local brewers, Anarchy Brewery, serving Wor Beer. With a contribution from each beer sale being donated to Wor Flags to help with their flag displays at St James Park NUFC matches.
